Dear Editor-Local Newspaper, There is a growing threat to the general taxpaying public, of which they are not aware. Some key leaders(name) in Indiana(or local) have promised the big labor bosses in Indiana that they will make back room deals that many times will be unseen by taxpayers. These are special schemes made on public construction projects funded by your tax dollars. The names for these schemes are project labor agreements. The first requirement in these deals is that successful bidders have to sign a union collective bargaining agreement. What that means in Indiana is that only one-third of construction workers belong to a union and that the vast majority of construction compainies are non-union. Therefore, these agreements lock out the majority of contractors and construction workers. As we all know, when competition is limited, prices tend to increase the cost of construction as much as 20-30%. Why should taxpayers have to pay 20-30% more for their public construction versus the same quality and safety as a privately built structure? In these days of tax upheaval, our government leaders should be looking at ways to cut tax burdens to the public, not striking back room deals to increase tax burden. What could be become more burdensome, more costly, and more wasteful than locking more than two-thirds of the construction industry out of the bidding process because leaders(name) want to take care of the big union bosses? If unions want more public contracts, let them get the contracts the old-fashioned way by competing for them. Welfare for unions is not cheap. Taxpayers should not have to pay for it. Sincerely, Your name
