Sample Legislator Date The Honorable Elected Officer Title Address City, State, Zip Honorable _______________: How would you answer these questions? What if a government entity with one signature would wipe out one business competing with another? What if the government would close all Marsh Supermarkets because they employed non-union labor and let Kroger Super Markets remain open because they employed union labor? What if the government determined that Republicans would have to donate to the Democratic party before they could vote? These scenarios sound utterly ridiculous. By arbritarily eliminating non-union companies from participating in tax-supported public projects one follows the same ridiculous logic. Despite the arguments routinely espoused by unions regarding union-only project labor agreements(PLAs), the simple fact is that they are discriminatory and anti-competitive. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, less than 17% of the construction workforce chooses to belong to a union. When a PLA is imposed, over 80% of the construction workforce that is "open shop" is effectively shut out from bidding. The inevitable end result is the lack of competition and higher construction costs. This is not what our schools, roads, libraries, and other major infrastructure projects need, especially when considering (state or local) budget challenges. I urge you to level the playing field for all contractors regardless of labor affiliation and to make impartiality and open competition the driving force behind the awarding of construction bids in (state/local). Sincerely, Your Name Title, Company
